Dusty: Chris, how did being selected by GT as part of the Dirt Coalition team feel when you first got the news you were accepted to the team in the spring?

Chris: I was honored and excited. I felt like I had won a contest, but I also felt I needed to earn the right to race for GT, to show them my gratitude for making the team and giving me the fastest bike to race.

Dusty: You were the winner of the 12 Hours of Humboldt race, congratulations! The course had lots of climbing and sweet descents, how did your GT Zaskar handle such a long and demanding race?

Chris: I was nervous to be racing on a hardtail for 12 straight hours. My worries were put to rest. The carbon frame of the GT Zaskar was super plush and comfortable. Bottom line the carbon Zaskar is a fast ride. It was efficient up all the climbs and responsive on all of the downhill's & twisty sections that the 12 Hours of Humboldt course challenged me with. By far this 12 Hour race win is the victory I'm the most proud of this year.

Dusty: You had a strong showing with your GT Dirt Coalition team tent at many events, can you share any stories about contacting random riders at races from just setting up your team tent and being proactive in spreading the good word about GT Bicycles?

Chris: I met a young man named Justin at the Howell Mountain Challenge in Napa Valley. His mom had driven him 2 hours from home to do his first mountain bike race. They saw my GT Dirt Coalition team kit and tent and approached me. He was nervous, nervous in the same way I was the first race I ever did. I spoke with him, tried to motivate him, and passed along that it will be so fun to do the race. He completed the race on what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year and was smiling. About two months later I saw him and his mom again at another XC event. He had caught the bug, a competitive spirit is now awake inside of him, and my words of motivation just might have helped him ease into his new favorite sport.

Dusty: Which event did you have the most impact on with your GT Team tent? and why?

Chris: Sacramento has a wonderful Wednesday night race series. The Prairie City Race series has 12 races through the summer, plus 5 fall races. There are 400 racers out there every week, of every skill level. This is really where I found myself as a competitive mountain bike racer. My tent and I were a mainstay at the race series. The race announcer allowed me to take the mic to talk about the GT Dirt Coalition and upcoming IMBA events. The Sacramento mountain bike race community is amazing and they are now very familiar with myself, the GT Dirt Coalition program, and my GT Zaskar.

Dusty: I noticed you had upgrades to your racing level in MTB races and on the Road, how has being a pat of the GT Dirt Coalition team motivated you to improve your performance on the bike this season?

Chris: When all was said and done, this season has been the most successful ever for me as a racer. Being selected for the GT Dirt Coalition team drove me to see what I could accomplish. I found success both on the Road and in the Dirt this year because of the confidence I gained through added race experience and the drive to earn the right to wear GT Dirt Coalition's team kit. This year successes and failures have brought me to a new level and I look forward to see where I can go from here. I owe GT a huge thanks for believing in me as a athlete who has a
desire to race bikes fast, and a individual who could represent their company in a positive way.

Dusty: Your story is one of success Chris! Both myself and GT Bicycles are stoked to have quality people such as yourself as part of the GT Dirt Coalition team. Lastly, what is your big cycling goal for 2010?

Chris: My win at the 12 hours of Humboldt has inspired to me to see what else I can do in endurance racing. My race calendar will include Solo 24 hour races for the first time with the goal of qualifying for the 24 Hour World Championships in Canberra, AU.

Dusty: Ride your GT hard, and ride it often Chris, and I know you will reach this goal. Thanks for working so hard to promote GT all year!

Dusty: Dean, How has being selected as a GT Dirt Coalition rider motivated you this season?

Dean: It has been a dream come true really. Many years ago I raced at a high level on the Road and in the Dirt. I very much wanted to jump back in the ring and race more, so when I was accepted as a Dirt Coalition rider it lit a fire inside me. I have trained more and raced more and being a part of GT on the "grass roots" level simply fired me up.

Dusty: Why did you want to represent GT as one of the few, the fast, and the dirty riders?

Dean: Riding in the dirt is the most fun for me. GT has always been a symbol of MTB racing at its best. I have admired the GT bikes for years and years. Like I said it was a dream come true to have this chance and I am stoked to be involved with GT.

Dusty: What do you like most about the GT Carbon Zaskar Pro model you have been riding?

Dean: For me, the bike is a perfect match. It just feels right. Right out of the box I knew it would be perfect. I like the smooth feeling of the Carbon ride. And most of all I like the bikes stiffness and power to the ground feeling. For me the bike is spot on.

Dusty: Tell me what has been your best experience on the Carbon Zaskar
during the year?

Dean: Besides just riding it on my local trails, my best time was at the Folsom MTB Stage race. I won my division for the stage race & I came 2 seconds off of the course record in the TT stage. Then I won the XC race-stage 2, on a course that was full of twists and turns. The course was super fun to race on and my bike worked flawlessly. To win the overall in my division at the stage race and almost break the course record in the TT was awesome and my most memorable ride I think.

Dusty: What has been your favorite race or event representing GT? and why?

Dean: My favorite time representing GT has to be my "Kids on Bikes" day I promote for under-privileged kids here near my home. The kids get all fired up to see the GT Dirt Coalition team tent set up, then they know it is time for hot laps on the courses I set up for them. Seeing the kids faces glow with happiness makes me want to keep doing my best to promote cycling on a local level.

Dusty: Lastly, what are your cycling goals for 2010?

Dean: I really want to keep on with what has started for me in 2009. I did as much racing as possible and I hope in 2010 I can continue to build on the fun and hard work I had in my first year on the GT Dirt Coalition team.

The following is a update from our friend Bob Saffel, be sure to link over and check him out as it sounds like he was ripping it up again this weekend.

No Race this weekend, first in a while, So a big ride was on tap. In the back of my mind I was nervous of how the Zaskar and lack of rear squishy would treat my 40+ body on a big ride. With the Laramie Enduro http://www.laramieenduro.org/ coming on August 1 and the Park City Point2Point http://thepcpp.com/ on September 5 I needed big miles, as well as a test of the hardtail on a long ride.

Park City Trails were on tap http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/trails/idx-uint.htm. Saturday Morning we had a group of 8 starting at the Glenwild trailhead. We lost a few riders along the way to keys locked in cars, flat tries and longer routes.

We started ion the 16'ish mile Flying Dog loop. This has about 2k feet of climbing and some fun downhill thrown in, nothing too technical, except for some rocks and switchbacks.

Then it was few miles of pavement over to the Round Valley trail System, this is a nice, exposed one track system next to the National Ability Center http://www.discovernac.org/. These trails are a bit more rocky and loose, but fun and flowy as well. At about mile 25 we stopped for a bathroom break and then headed over to the Skid Row, Lost Prospector trail, Shannon then took us some 'new' way to head towards Deer Valley, this new way included mostly a game trail, with granny gear grunts through thick scrub oak. We made it through, barely and then hooked up with the snowtop trail over to the Intermountain cup race course, Up and Down Heinous hill and then out to the little stick climb. From there we climbed Deer Crest up to the SIlver lake lodge and connected with the almighty Mid Mountain Trail.

4 of us dropped down from teh Mid- Mountain at Park City Mtn Resort on Johns trail and Sweeneys Switchbacks and then road the nordic, bike path trails back to teh cars. 5.5 hours, 50 Miles, 6500+ feet of climbing.

The Zaskar performed flawlessly. It dampens vibrations and climbs like a goat. It holds a line in the twisty singletrack and handles the technical rocks with ease.

Mission accomplished!

Mohican 100

Brad Wilhelm taking a much deserved rest after the Mohican 100k. We are putting a little spotlight on Brad because we had a great opportunity to talk with him before and after the event. Like a pro Brad started on the line at the Mohican 100. At the gun he started up the 15% grade mile climb with the leaders battling for the $200 prime at the top. He battled back and forth, but was edged out by the eventual winner, Jeremiah Bishop.
This picture doesn't do Brad or his site justice. Brad set his tent up at the finish shoulder to shoulder with the Pro Team semis. This was a rare moment as most of the afternoon his pit was full of friends and fans. 4th in the 100k, way to go Brad.

This post is for all the GT fans who did not make the Dirt Coalition Team. Jorge asked us if he could visit the GT HQ in Madison, Wisconsin while he was in Milwaukee training for a month. Jorge is a GT Super Fan who contributes almost weekly to the GT Forum on MTBR so we certainly couldn't say no. While training here in Wisconsin he even volunteered with local trail building crews. How cool is that! We set Jorge up with Lee for a local ride and then a tour of the facility. He applied to the team but unfortunately was not excepted this year, however he remained super positive and loyal to us. We just wanted to take this opportunity to thank him and everyone who applied, didn't get excepted, but stayed with us this season.

We have just learned that Madison, Wisconsin is in contention to host the IMBA National Summit. The Mayor as well as the president of CORP met with with representatives of IMBA last week to discuss the possibility of the summit coming to the city. The meeting also focused on the possibility of adding mountain bike trails to one of the larger and more popular parks located in the city. We should know if Madison will host the Summit in just one week.

Prototype Survives

Just the calm before the storm waiting for the bulk of the DC Team to start racing. We have already seen some good results from a few of our riders in the South and West and we are expecting to see the same kind of returns from the rest of the riders from Middle Earth once their respective seasons kick off. Working not Racing Weekend

GT Dirt Coalition Riders are more than just racers, they are workers and representatives for our brand. Sure you will find them racing, but chances are you will also find them working alongside a IMBA trail crew or even at the local bikes shop helping the owner out with a spring sale. Lee Unwin of Madison, WI was doing just that this weekend. He spent his Saturday and Sunday helping out Williamson Bikes and Fitness with their Spring Mega Sale. Below is his report.

Williamson has been great to me over the years and in return I agree to work their Spring & Fall sales. I meet with the store manager a couple weeks before the sale then have him schedule me for a set amount of hours that I know I can commit to. I help with the accessories and GT specifically because these are the things I know best. The sale this year had a lot of Reps. from all areas of the industry, it was great to meet them and learn more about the products that they sell. I know some guys aren't comfortable in sales, but shops are usually happy to get any help they can at sale time, so just talk to the owner, tell them what you are best at and they will find a place for you.

I learned yesterday that a couple of our Dirt Coalition Team Members from Ohio made the trip to Rays to hang out with some of our Marketing staff, Demo Crew, and Pro- riders. Not even a race and our Team is hard at work flying the colors. Thanks guys.

Team Tents

Team, you should be receiving your tent this week. I know many of you have already received them and are putting them up in drive ways and backyards around the country. With any luck your tent looks like this when you are finished. Simple tip for those that have never used a pop up tent. First, get the legs just far enough apart so that you can slide under the tent, then standing directly under the peak, lift the entire tent up and off the ground by pushing up on the center post, it may not work well the first time, but after a couple times it will pop up easily. The tents come with stakes, however you may want to spend just a couple dollars and purchase a soft mallet and stakes that look like very large nails. Many soils will be to hard to push the provided stakes into. The soft mallet will allow you to drive the stakes in without damaging the tent legs. Any questions just post in comments

The GT Dirt Coalition Team for 2009 has been finalized. There are 39 riders total meaning there must have been 4 extra riders that they just couldn't pass on. Kits and bikes should be arriving next week, but it will be perhaps up to 2 weeks before team members receive bikes and kits. I am on the road racing this week, but I will do my best to get the link or names up asap.
Zaskar or Marathon always a tough question, but whatever you picked you will love how it rides and races.

Clothing and Kits are being finalized and we expect to take shipment in about a month. Because each manufacture designs clothing and equipment a little differently, we will provide some guidelines for bike and clothing sizing as we get closer to finalizing the Team.
We hope to have the first shipment of Team Issued Bikes arriving at the same time. When we get product we will post pictures of models wearing clothing and sitting on and over bikes for reference.

Team issue bikes, look for them at the start lines and podiums near you. We tried to give our riders as much Carbon as a Formula 1 driver and we expect them to be just as fast.
